Become a Mentor
Personal help and support play a major role in students’
decision to stay in school. That’s why Expectation Graduation
promotes mentor programs.
Research shows that students too often lack the adult contacts and nurturing
that are so important for earning a diploma. Volunteer mentors fill that
void, providing the face-to-face encouragement to keep students on track
toward graduation.
Thanks to donations by Research In Motion (RIM) and
Verizon, an electronic mentoring pilot program has been implemented
at Lee High School. Students receive BlackBerry devices so they can
have instant communication with their mentors and teachers.
However, personal support always counts most. Mentors
spend face-to-face time with their students. They review their graduation
plans with them and find support with tutoring and career planning.
Mentors show these young people what matters most to them; somebody
genuinely cares about their commitment to graduate.
Expectation Graduation is a member of the Greater Houston Mentoring
Collaborative and has partnerships with several mentoring organizations
throughout the Houston area.
